The Dell City School will host a very special event tomorrow – when Cougar Field is dedicated and formally renamed Trooper Michael “Mike” Schulze Football Field.

The dedication ceremony begins at 5 p.m. (Mountain time), and all are invited to attend.

Trooper Schulze – “Mountain Mike” – was stationed at Pine Springs, on the eastern flank of the Guadalupe Mountains, for 17 years, and he was a dedicated friend and servant of the Dell City School, and of the Dell Valley community. He was our school's resource officer – but his contributions as a guardian and advocate for the school, and as an inspiration for students, extended far beyond that role.

Mike passed away March 29. His commitment to the Dell City School never wavered, even in his final days, as he made sure his DPS colleagues continued to visit our campus. In April, Orlando Alanis, the DPS' West Texas regional director, came before the Dell City school board with a request – that Cougar Field be renamed in Mike's honor, as a way “to educate those in attendance of what [Mike] meant to the school,” Alanis said, and to “keep his legacy going for years to come.” In May, the school board voted unanimously to make the change.

Mike's name and photo have been installed at the north end of the football field, on the scoreboard. Mike's DPS brothers and sisters, and members of Mike's family will attend tomorrow's dedication ceremony. The event goes forward, despite the cancellation of football games scheduled for the evening.

Please join us at this special ceremony, honoring the unbreakable bond between our school, and a one-of-a-kind law officer, and human being.
